Martial Arts: Tae-Kwon-Do students prove big hit

LIVERPOOL Tae-Kwon-Do Club students are celebrating their latest haul of medals from the 2008 South Midlands Championships in Hereford.

Six students from the club took part bringing back to Merseyside a medal collection that included one gold, one silver and three bronze.

“It was an excellent achievement from all involved,” said member Stefanie Foster.

The club’s most successful student, 25-year-old Foster, bagged gold in ladies blue and red belt middleweight sparring and bronze in ladies blue belt patterns.

Katie Elliott, 24, scooped bronze in the ladies black belt lightweight sparring.

Callum Gough, 11, claimed bronze in boys blue belt patterns.

And the day proved even more special for birthday girl Leigh Yoxall, 16, who collected a silver in girls yellow and green belt heavyweight sparring.

Foster said: “This was Leigh’s first ever Tae-kwon-do tournament medal – which was obviously a great birthday present!”

Also taking part were 10-year-old twins Josh and Ethan Calland. Both boys fought very well in the boys yellow & green belt lightweight sparring event undeterred by the knowledge that they were up against older and more experienced opponents. Unfortunately they missed out on the medals, but the club has high hopes for them in future tournaments.

Foster said: “It was the first tournament of the year, and our students were determined to get 2008 off to a good start.

“All the students performed to a high standard against some tough opposition.”

The Liverpool Tae-Kwon-Do club is a member of the Tae-Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB), and has classes in Halewood, Kensington and West Derby.
