Swimming: Fran Halsall looks to go one better at the Beijing Olympics

SWIMMING: Southport’s European medley relay champion Fran Halsall heads into this week’s British Championships in Sheffield looking to go one better than four years ago and qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

The 17-year-old former multiple European junior champion swam the fifth fastest 100m free split in history when her time of 53.02 seconds anchored the British 4x100m medley squad to victory at the European Championships earlier this month in a new European record time.

She said yesterday: “We went away just after and I was sat in the airport thinking hopefully in four years time I’ll be in that final making the Olympic team. I think the times I am doing now would probably have got me quite highly placed in the Olympics last time – it’s all exciting.”
