Take the train to Aintree, punters are advised

RACEGOERS are being advised to rely on public transport to journey to and from Aintree for the three days of the John Smith’s Grand National meeting.

Between 60,000 and 80,000 train journeys to the world-famous racecourse will be made between today and Saturday.

But police respons-ible for keeping punters moving say to avoid traffic chaos, it is best to leave the car at home.

Merseytravel will lay on more and longer trains on the network to help ease pressure.

Chief Superintendent Mark Matthews said: “Merseyside Police would encourage racegoers to travel to the event by public transport where possible to avoid congestion and parking problems.

“I would like to thank the public in anticipation of their co-operation for what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable event.”

Six roads will remain closed to cars until 7pm on Saturday, with a further three roads facing periodic closures.

Police say this is to maintain public safety and access for emergency vehicles.

Meanwhile, passenger loads at Liverpool John Lennon airport are expected to surge by 15% over the next three days.

Airport managers estimate 5,500 will fly in, with many coming from destinations that are traditionally home to racing enthusiasts.

Around 50 inbound flights will arrive from Dublin, Cork, Shannon, both Belfast airports and Derry Airports today and Friday.
