Athletics: West Cheshire youngsters excel at Woodbank

WEST CHESHIRE AC’s youngsters posted success on the opening weekend of the track and field season.

The club’s under-11s won the team event at the Cheshire Track and Field League first round at Stockport’s Woodbank Park.

Amy Williams, Charlotte Williamson, Georgia Barlow, Olivia Williams, Tess Corr, Sophie Baker, Anna Connor-Asteros, and Jennifer Munro-Brown bagged the points for the girls squad, while James McMahon, Charlie Lloyd, and Jack Johnson comb-ined for the U11s boys.

Alice Jennings cleared a grade two height of 1.51m for victory in the under-15s girls high jump, while Leah Ferrie, Danielle Erskine, Alice McMahon, and Jenni Potter won their U15s girls 100m races.

Russell Kirk and Alan Littler combined for the senior men’s points, while Becky Grimes, Debbie Erskine, and Glenys Potter teamed up for the senior ladies.

Chris Goodwin won the U15s boys 1,500m in 4:46.7 and the long jump with 4.71m, alongside Dave Donkin with 4.52m.

Adam Howell (18.26m) and Michael Willis (14.66m) won in the A and B discus events, and Adam clocked 26.8 seconds for second spot in the 200m.

Oliver Ashworth (31.2), Alex Kirk (30.4), Chris McCartney (32.4) and Leon Langmead (33.0) won in their U13s boys 200m, while Alex (1-17m) and Leon (1-12m) won in the high jump.

Kelly Baker (17.71m) and Olivia Montez-Brown (12.80m) won their U13s girls discus events, and they were backed in their age group by Laura Rigby and Lucy Earl.

RESULTS: UNDER-11s: 1 West Cheshire 94 points, 2 Trafford 78, 3 Deeside 74; 4 Stockport 51, 5 Handforth 29.

MEN: 1 West Cheshire 144, 2 Trafford 142, 3= Stockport, and Deeside 103, 5 Handforth 78.

LADIES: 1 Deeside 168, 2 Stockport 128, 3 West Cheshire 117, 4 Trafford 77; 5 Handforth 30; 6 Vale Royal 4.

Dave McKay launched himself to victory in the men’s javelin with a throw of 61.96m at the Melbourne Trophy Meeting at Wavertree, Liverpool.

Emily Clarke won the U17s ladies long jump with 4.79m and posted 9.49m in the triple jump for second spot, while Emily Fisher secured second place in the U17s ladies javelin with 29.72m, and Bryony Potter clocked 42.7 seconds for third place in the U17s ladies 300m.

FIXTURES: The opening round of the National Under-20s Junior Track and Field League, at Stanney, Ellesmere Port, on Sunday, the same day as the Whitley 10k, near Warrington (11am start), and the Croxteth Park 10k, in Liverpool (11am start).
