Kitching dismayed with time despite winning

MORE than 1,800 runners completed the Shell Chester Half Marathon.

The event, organised by West Cheshire AC, was won by Paul Sankey more than a minute clear of Declan Fahey, of Tullamore Harriers, who posted 1:12:05, and Phillip Matthews, of Chepstow Harriers, finished third in 1:12:31.

Marilyn Kitching, representing Tattenhall Runners, won the ladies race with a time of 1:24:14.

Kitching had turned down her Welsh place at the Great Manchester 10k Run to compete in the Chester event and was surprised to discover she had won after clocking a disappointing time.

Among host club, West Cheshire AC’s finishers were Andrew Clague (29th in 1:22:29), Stephen Williams (129th in 1:30:23), Max Woods (219th in 1:34:39), Brian Beattie (377th in 1:40:02), Andrew Hetherington (419th in 1:41:47), Clive Sykes (470th in 1:43:07), Joanne Fellows (699th in 1:48:35), Peter Weir (799th in 1:50:51), Sacha Kendall Woods (914th in 1:53:45), Jayne Boyle (991st in 1:55:27), Kevan Hearn (1,402nd in 2:07:53), and Brenda Sharp (1,711st in 2:25:05). The Wirral AC quartet of Xavier Desse, Stephen Spence, Kevin Keating, and Peter Scarratt won the men’s team event.

And Tattenhall Runners’ trio of Marilyn Kitching, Joanna Marsden, and Amanda Davies clinched the ladies team prize.

Bradley Edwards and Liam Renton headed West Cheshire AC’s charge at the second round of the Young Athletes League Northern Premier League match held at Litherland.

The pair combined to secure maximum points in the under-15 boys 1500m, with Bradley posting 4:38.9 for victory, and Liam clocking 4:39.9 for top spot in the B race.

MATCH SCORE: 1 Southport Waterloo 409 points; 2 West Cheshire 327.5; 3 Wigan 302.5; 4 City of York 280.
