Bason smashes Anfield time trial record

THE long-standing record set by Dave Lloyd in the Anfield BC’s 100 miles hilly time trial has been smashed by Andy Bason of Wrekinsport CC.

Going off like a rocket from the start, Bason completed the Shropshire course in 3 hours 44 minutes 13 seconds, knocking off nearly 3 minutes from Lloyd’s amazing time of 3.47.10, set in 1982. Taking the WR Donovan Trophy, Bason said: “I’m very shocked and proud to have broken such a tough record set by Dave Lloyd.

“My form has come good lately. I rode two ten mile time trials a couple of days before the event and it seems they benefited me.

“The weather didn’t make any difference to my performance today as it both hindered as well as helped me in places. I’m really happy.”

Last man off, Nik Gardiner, John’s Bikes, winner in 2004 and 2006 did 3.52.43 and what would have been a winning time in previous years. Third was John Morgan, Preston Wheelers in 3.53.16. Port Sunlight Wheelers provided the fastest woman, Jill Hume who recorded 5.07.33. Liverpool Century RC’s Colin Hayes was 7th with 4.18.24.

Former Team Raleigh professional, Dave Lloyd, who came to fruition under the guidance of Kirkby CC’s famous coach, Eddie Soens, said: “I’m not surprised the record has gone as it’s been held for a long time. Bason has produced a fantastic ride.”
