Thompson hits the heights again for Liverpool

KATRINA THOMPSON continued her excellent season with victory in the high jump at the UK School Games at Bath.

The Liverpool athlete entered the competition at 1.63 and bowed out an easy winner at 1.78.

Wirral’s Sid Srinivas continued his good form by finishing second in the 400m hurdles in 56.25 and there were places in the finals for Lauren Brennan (300m), Adam Davies (hammer), Michael Carmona-Jones (discus), Michael Lyness (high jump) and Kathryn Sumner (hammer).

At the Mid Lancs medal meeting held at Stanley Park, Blackpool SouthportWaterloo’s Sally Wareing won the 200m, 800m and collected bronze in the shot putt.

Gary Clark won the 800m and there were medals for Beth McBride (100m), Ellon Hart (300m), Ruth Doran (shot putt) and Michael Panes (1,500m).

Liverpool’s Andrew Allen, with a javelin throw of 55.21, and Zoe Woodward (300m and 800m) also came away with awards.

LPS failed to make an appearance although Sammy Rashid finished 11th in the Chesterfield Spire 10-mile race in Derbyshire.

In a poorly-attended match at Abingdon, Warrington’s Matthew Jackson and Steven Broadhurst, representing the North, finished third and fourth over 1,500m in time just shy of four minutes.

Wirral’s Becky McLinden was fifth in the 400m.

The track league season draws to a close with the final fixtures in the Cheshire League taking place at various venues. Halton & Frodsham host a match at Connah’s Quay with East Cheshire, Wirral and Crewe among the visitors.

St Helens-Sutton travel to Stretford where Trafford, Altrincham and Manchester are among the opposition, while West Cheshire entertain Macclesfield, Salford Metropolitan and Vale Royal at Stanney Oaks in Ellesmere Port.

This weekend sees the closing date for the Northern 10,000m track race which takes place on September 13 during the final of the Northern Cup competition.
