ANSELMIANS and Sefton made progress to the second stage of the EDF Energy Vase as the new rugby union season got under way.
Anselmians saw off Old Bedians 46-5 at Malone Field. There were tries from Duncan Hendry, Mark Petterson, Nick Lamming, Liam Cambridge, Sean Barrow, Adam Neal and Nick Letollis. John Close added four conversions and a penalty.
Sefton just got home 20-17 at Trafford MV. There was a penalty try plus tries from John James and Wayne Osborne. John Fenton landed one conversion and a crucial penalty.
Birkenhead Park’s friendly against Lymm fell victim to the weather but New Brighton completed their pre-season work with a 21-14 success at Whitchurch. Skipper Kati Tuipulotu scored all three tries and Stephen Dean added the goals. Loa Topou played his last game for the club in the second-row before moving to Perth, Australia.
The vast majority of clubs did not have fixtures but there is a full round of league action on Saturday.
