FORMER Great Britain captain Paul Sculthorpe last night brought down the curtain on his illustrious playing career.
The St Helens loose forward announced his retirement from the game at the age of 30 following his latest in a catalogue of injuries that have plagued him the last three years of his career.
Sculthorpe, who singled out Saints' win over Wigan in the 2004 Challenge Cup final as the highlight of his career, looks set to stay on at Knowsley Road as a member of the backroom staff.
“I seriously couldn’t pull on another shirt other than the Red Vee and face the Saints,” he said.
“The last three years have been a horrendously difficult time for me in terms of injuries.”
St Helens chairman Eamon McManus led the tributes to the club captain, saying: “Scully has been a colossus of the game, both at club and national level.”
