LSH run of form is brought to an end

LIVERPOOL ST HELENS’ recent run of good form in North Two West came to an end at Wilmslow, where they were outplayed.

Apart from a productive spell in the second quarter they failed to take advantage of plentiful possession.

In contrast Wilmslow, with considerably less of the ball, made the very best use of it and won by four tries to two.

The hosts were 14-3 in front with converted tries from Ross Hunter and Mike Clifford, separated by a Greg Smith penalty, before LSH hit their stride. Good lineout work in the 29th minute led to Smith neatly side stepping over before converting his own try. Five minutes later centre Matt Cunliffe had a try controversially disallowed, only for the ensuing lineout resulting in Gareth Tudor crashing through to score. Smith converted to give LSH a one-point lead.

Tim Medwell scored a crucial try just before the break and Wilmslow did enough in the second half to prevent a lacklustre LSH from scoring. Ben Day made the game secure for the home side with a try six minutes from the end.

SEFTON enjoyed a 28-22 win at Ruskin Park in South Lancashire/Cheshire Two. Wayne Osborne, Gerraint Thomas and Stu Bailey breached the home defence and John Fenton targeted two conversions and a trio of penalties.
