No solace for rivals as Caldy record seventh win

CALDY produced an excellent display in demanding conditions at Nuneaton to extend their lead at the head of National Three North.

It was a seventh success in eight outings for the go-ahead Wirral club.

“The players responded really well to a difficult challenge. Now we must prepare for another massive game at home to Fylde on Saturday,” said Director of Rugby Tony Atherton.

Caldy used the strong wind to good advantage in the opening period to build up a 24-3 advantage and their fourth try in the third quarter put them in an almost unassailable position.

Nuneaton did rally with three tries and one conversion from Rick Aley, who had earlier landed a penalty and a drop goal, but they had to settle for second best as Caldy defended stoutly.

Caldy went 17 points clear inside half an hour with well taken tries by Andy Soutar and Jake Lyon, both converted by Gavin Roberts, who also landed a penalty. The visiting forwards then showed their worth as Paul White powered over from a line-out, following a good touch find by Ben Macpherson, and Roberts added the extras.

Macpherson always looked dangerous for Caldy and his fine break culminated in Mark Turner going over for try number four. Roberts continued to make light of the difficult conditions with another excellent goal.

Nuneaton narrowed the gap appreciably without ever really threatening to turn things around. A bonus point took Caldy seven points ahead of their nearest rivals.
