THE already keen competition between Lancashire wicketkeepers Luke Sutton and Gareth Cross looks set to get even more intense next season.
In 2008 Sutton played in the Championship games, while Cross's destructive hitting helped to earn him a place in the Twenty20 and Pro40 sides. But Mike Watkinson has given no guarantees that the division of work will be anything like as neat next summer.
“We have spoken to both keepers and there will be no "you'll play in the Championship, you'll play in the one-dayers" , he said. "We have got competition between two decent wicketkeeper-batsmen."
Watkinson's comments reflect the view that 24-year-old Cross failed to take his opportunities in over-limit cricket last season. The former Leigh batsman scored just 236 runs in 18 innings.
