EDF Energy Intermediate Cup holders Chester crashed to a surprise defeat in their first outing in this season’s competition.
Fellow Midlands One outfit Malvern, who had not won a game this season, turned in a whole-hearted display to move into round three.
Chester, with a below-strength side, began well enough with tries from Gareth Coy and Ross White, plus a Tom Foden penalty, but two converted second quarter tries by Malvern made it 14-13 at the halfway stage. Malvern struck again soon after the re-start with their third converted try. Chester than camped in home territory for long periods but could not find a way through.
Their only reward was a Foden penalty and they are now left to concentrate on their league commitments.
Hooker Dewi Williams did well for the visitors but they disappointed on the day.
