Athletics: It’s no walk in the park for David Forrester

DAVID FORRESTER (St Helens-Sutton) defends his European trials crown at one of the biggest events of the season when the Cross Country Challenge series comes to Sefton Park on Saturday.

Forrester won last year’s race and went on to compete in the World and European Championships.

This year he faces strong opposition led by Simon Horsfield (East Cheshire).

Warrington AC provide Stephen Broadhurst and Danny Cliffe while Harry Ellis competes in the U17 battle with Heather Timmins and Amy Rose Talbot taking part in the U20 women’s event.

Although there’s a raft of races taking place at 11am, only Wirral AC, St Helens-Sutton and Warrington AC have entered any significant numbers with Liverpool’s James Horman the only senior in the Cross Challenge competition.

One athlete not competing is Liverpool’s Katherine Upton, who has opted to concentrate on running indoors during the winter.

Upton missed the first Northern Athletics Indoor competition at Sheffield last weekend. Kate Anson won the hurdles in 9.71 and took second place in the high jump with 1.60m.

Liverpool colleague Oliver Back recorded 16.99 in winning the 150m.
