Lancashire sign up promising batsman with two-year deal

LANCASHIRE manager Mike Watkinson believes the county has secured the services of a “quality young batsman” by adding 23-year-old Adrian Shankar to the playing staff.

Shankar played four Second XI Champion-ship matches for Lancashire in the second half of last season and is a former Middlesex Academy member. The Cambridge University law graduate also played for Kent’s second team in 2008 but had already spent some time at Old Trafford during pre-season.

“Adrian is a quality young batsman who fills a gap in our player development program-me,” said Watkinson. “He has attracted interest from a number of other counties, which confirms his potential.”

Ascot-born Shankar, who has signed a two-year contract, said that Lancashire was always his “preferred destination.”

“My father spent his formative years in Liverpool and retains great affection for the area,” he added. “Even though I have grown up in the South, I have an emotional tie to the North West and my experience of the people there has only reinforced that.

“I know competition for places will be fierce but that is healthy for the club. I had a positive spell in the second XI this year and the senior players were very open and welcoming.”
