Positives for plucky Waterloo

IT was to Waterloo’s credit that they led against Birmingham Solihull up to the 18th minute but with the opposition picking a strong team from their full-time professionals, it was only a matter of time before the home side was overwhelmed.

Nevertheless, Waterloo could take more than a little comfort. There were also some fine performances from Bell in the back row and young Dominic McVeigh, making his starting debut on the right wing. McVeigh had been on the bench for every game this season as reserve scrum-half. He seized his chance and was defensively excellent, demonstrating how to make tackles count.

Other good performances came from Waterloo’s giant player-coach Martin O’Keefe, who made sure some of his former Midlands team-mates knew they had been in a game. While Jan van Deventer, who came back from weeks of injury to start on the left wing, was excellent as was O’Brien at full-back when the latter had to step up to out-half.
