NEW Warrington coach Tony Smith admits the Wolves may have hit a new low with their 60-8 drubbing by Harlequins but for him the disappointment is nothing compared to England’s World Cup misery.
Warrington are bottom of the engage Super League table after making their worst ever start to a season and Saturday’s 10-try rout at the Twickenham Stoop was a club record 10th straight defeat.
But Smith, who is just two matches into his reign as Wolves head coach, said his lowest point came in Australia after England bowed out of the World Cup with a fourth successive defeat.
“Not so long ago was the lowest for me for quite some time,” he said
“Saturday was nowhere near that. But I suppose for some of the fans and some of the players, maybe it is their lowest point.
“I like the challenge and I am enjoying the challenge of this one. I think the players are rolling up their sleeves.”
Some pundits have called on Smith to undertake a major overhaul but the ex-Huddersfield and Leeds boss says it is too early for a clear-out.
He said: “That’s not practical.
“You have got to have bodies capable of stepping in if you are going to clear out but it’s too early for that.
“There may well be some changes to the team for this week – that’s certainly under discussion – but, in terms of clearing out, it’s way too severe.
“If it’s found to be warranted at some stage, then I’m responsible for doing that but I’m a long way off any of those thoughts. I’ll give everybody a chance to prove themselves.”
One player guaranteed his place for Sunday’s match against Hull KR at the Halliwell Jones Stadium is under-fire Australian centre Matt King, who yesterday apologised to fans for the gesture he made during the second half at Harlequins.
Smith said: ““I’ll be sticking by Matt and so will his mates.”
