Caldy come from 25 points behind to beat Harrogate

Caldy rugby

It seemed like a tough proposition to win the game from this point as the elements would be against the Caldy side in the second half, but no-one could have expected what was to happen next.

Harrogate then scored four tries inside 20 minutes – from Ed Smithies twice, James Murray and their winger, two of which were converted to make it 38-13.

However, the game was turned on its head as Dave Westhead, Ollie Cooper and Matt Lamming came on as substitutes on 53 minutes, the latter having a massive impact with his powerful and direct running.

On 58 minutes James Remfry scored a try from the back of a rolling maul which was converted by Roberts to make it 38-20.

Harrogate replied immediately with a penalty to make it 41-20, but on 63 minutes, Gavin Roberts skipped through to score under the posts, which he converted himself to make it 41-27.

Then in the 64th and 73rd minutes, Caldy scored two similar tries out wide on the right wing as first Turner and then Cooper went in after great phase play.

Roberts’ kicking game was exemplary as he sent over both conversions into a strong wind to make it 41-41.

The impossible suddenly seemed possible as Harrogate were out on their feet. In the last minute, the home team were penalised for offside just outside their 22-metre line and Roberts – as expected at this point – took two steps back and slotted the penalty to make it 41-44.
