Waterloo's youngsters show true spirit against Redruth

WITH bottom-placed Waterloo facing relegation at from National League Two and Redruth top and vying for promotion an upset was unlikely.

Yet Waterloo’s predominantly young players never let themselves down.

They tackled themselves to a standstill and tried to run the ball on the few occasions they had possession.

They were unlucky not to score more tries than Neil Kerfoot’s 54th-minute left corner finish to a move involving half-breaks and quick passing among the backs. Fly-half Liam Reeve also missed two difficult penalty chances by only narrow margins.

Even at the death they were pressing the Redruth line but by then, the home side had scored 14 tries, all but one converted by fly-half Mark Scrivener.

Six tries came from full-back Emyr Lewis, a recent transfer from Bedford with the other eight from winger Rob Thirlby (4), back-row James Mann, skipper and centre PJ Gidlow, back-row substitute Chris Fuca, and Gidlow’s substitute Craig Bond, making his 200th appearance for the club.
