Former Lancs star Law joins rivals Derbyshire

STUART LAW has agreed to join Derbyshire on a limited-overs contract this summer.

The veteran Queensland-born but English-qualified batsman was released by Lancashire at the end of last season and will feature for the Phantoms throughout their 2009 Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup campaigns. Law, 40, spent eight seasons at Old Trafford – where he was captain last season, having continued the prolific run-scoring exploits which once earned him Test and one-day international recognition and made him a lynchpin for Essex before he moved north to Lancashire.

“I am very happy to be committing to Derbyshire,” he said.

“They are an up-and-coming club with a good mixture of youth and experience, and I look forward to helping out some of the younger guys in the squad.

“I still have the hunger and drive to succeed at this level and I can’t wait to join the side and get stuck into the new and exciting challenge ahead.”

Meanwhile, in the Emirates Airline Pro ARCH Trophy Fly Emirates were skittled for just 48 by Lancashire in their penultimate game, losing by a mammoth 214 runs. Lancashire, who face Yorkshire tomorrow, totalled 262 for five in their 50 overs, with opener Steven Mullaney contributing 103 – his innings containing seven fours and four sixes.

But it was Steve Cheetham who was the star of the show, picking up five for 12 as the Fly Emirates side had no answer to the Lancashire attack.

There were four wickets for Oliver Newby as Lancashire romped home with 28 overs to spare.
