Aintree Grand National: Officers enjoy honour of leading in winner

THIS year’s Grand National saw the welcome return of a racecourse tradition, with two local police officers leading in the winning horse.

The practice was abandoned after racecourse security improvements but this year, two long-serving officers had the honour of escorting Mon Mome into the parade ring in their full regalia.

Sgt Paddy Kelly, 39, has worked with Merseyside Police’s mounted section since 2001.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be part of the occasion and join in the pomp and ceremony because the National is such a spectacle.

“It’s good to have been there yesterday and play a part in the world’s most iconic horse race, and that’s something I’m really proud of.”

Lynn Maher, 49, is retiring from the force after 31 years.

“The National is the most watched sporting event in the world, and it was a big job with everybody watching us at the course and on television around the world.

“It’s a great atmosphere at the festival, and it’s a great end to my career.”
