WIDNES survived a nervous last few minutes as they hung on to take the spoils 22-20 against Sheffield Eagles at the Don Valley Stadium.
With time ticking away, a Mike Roby try for the Eagles brought them to within two points but fullback Jonny Woodcock couldn't add the extras from wide out.
Amazingly, the Vikings' John Duffy then kicked the restart out on the full to give Woodcock a second chance to snatch a draw, this time from the centre spot.
The final hooter sounded as Woodcock lined up the kick and fortunately for Widnes he pulled his attempt left of the posts.
It must have come as a huge relief to Vikings boss Paul Cullen who had seen his team come close to surrendering a 22-4 half-time lead.
Sheffield opened the scoring with a try from winger Bolu Fagborun before Widnes took control.
They scored tries through substitute Richard Varkulis, John Duffy and scrum half James Webster and Richard Fletcher before the interval.
The Eagles hit back with tries from Tangi Ropati, stand-off Brendon Lindsay and winger Roby.
