Athletics: Kristy Longley sprints ahead to win anniversary race

LIVERPOOL Pembroke Sefton’s Kirsty Longley took the women’s prize in the silver anniversary Waterloo 15K Road Race after producing a devastating sprint finish.

Longley’s time of 58:13 was a new course record and a personal best.

Rachel Jones was second in 58:24 with Nicola Bird (Ellesmere Port RC) third in 59:52.

There were 460 finishers over the gruelling course and Liverpool Harriers’ Richard Burney won the main race in 50:02.

Last year’s winner, Matt Moorhouse (Salford Harriers), was second in 51:14 with Richard Shearer (Southport Waterloo) third in 52:00.

The Fitness Connection 3K Fun Run was won by Southport Waterloo’s Niall Cullen in 10:31.

There were golds for Liverpool Harriers duo Jonny Mellor and Matthew Owens at the British University Athletics Championships in Bedford.

John Moores University student Mellor won the 5000m crown in 14:18.01 as he comfortably held off the challenge of Liverpool University’s David Forrester.

The runner-up’s time of 14:26.44 was a new St Helens Sutton club record.

Owens, who also attends JMU, clinched victory in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.05m.

There was a silver medal for fellow Harrier Helen Asher in the 100m hurdles as she clocked 13.62secs.

Liverpool Harriers won their Northern League Division Three West match at Wigan.

Oliver Back won the 100m in a PB of 11.0secs and also took the 200m in 22.4.

There were also A string wins in the men’s events for Will Lowndes (hammer, shot) Chris Roose (pole vault), Jamie Creighton (high jump), Daniel Yip (400m) and Andrew Allan (javelin).

Gemma Llewellyn (discus) and Emma Wakefield (400m) were also on top of the podium.
