Griffiths at her best to win

VICKY GRIFFITHS set a new personal best on her way to victory in the 400 metres at the McCain Loughborough International.

The 24-year-old Liverpool Harrier, who only narrowly missed out on selection for last year’s Olympics, opted to drop down from her usual 800m distance and clocked an impressive 53.80secs.

Griffiths was part of the victorious England team compet-ing in the annual contest against Great Britain Juniors, Loughborough Students, British Universities, England, Scotland and Wales.

Jonny Mellor finished second in the 3000m (8:09.53), while Helen Asher was fourth in the 100m hurdles (13.87).

LIVERPOOL Pembroke Sefton finished last in their Young Athletes League match against Sale, Doncaster and Gateshead.

LIVERPOOL Harriers were second in their Young Athletes League match at Wavertree. They finished ahead of Blackpool and Macclesfield but behind Preston.

ERIN DONAGH and Michael Panes were Southport Waterloo’s athletes of the match as the club finished third in their clash against Leeds, Sheffield and Warrington.
