Rugby League: Hull KR 24, Warrington Wolves 25

WARRINGTON coach Tony Smith was delighted with the result but disappointed by the performance after his side pulled off a stunning 25-24 Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Hull KR.

Rovers scrum-half Michael Dobson kicked a 78th-minute penalty to tie the scores for a third time and Wolves stand-off Lee Briers failed with a last-minute drop-goal attempt as the tie went into sudden-death extra-time.

The visitors then dominated the extra period, with Briers missing with three further drop-goal attempts before finally hitting the mark to end the match and put his side into tomorrow’s semi-final draw.

Smith said of the former Warrington skipper: “He put his hand up and said, ‘Just get me to the 50 and I’ll put it over’. He’s a confident young man.

“My boys gave him enough shots. He wasn’t far off with the others and he eventually got it right.”

There was little to choose between the sides after a first half in which the scores were locked at 6-6, but Hull KR looked the likely winners when second-half tries from overseas trio Clint Newton, Ben Galea and Jake Webster enabled them to establish a 22-12 lead.

However Warrington threequarters Matt King and Chris Bridge pounced for quickfire tries that set up the dramatic finish and, after Bridge had kicked his fourth conversion, Briers had the final say.

“I don’t know if either team will have been happy with their performance,” added Smith.

“We’re obviously happy with the result but at half-time I thought we were pretty ordinary and Hull KR weren’t as good as I’ve seen them in recent times.

“It was pretty scrappy. There were some pleasing aspects but it wasn’t until we went two scores behind that we started to defend with a bit of gusto,” said the coach.
