Athletics: Brilliant Bomba hurls personal best in hammer

MICHAEL BOMBA was crowned athlete of the match in City of Liverpool’s National Division One clash at Abingdon.

The 22-year-old hammer thrower from West Derby climbed to eighth in the UK ranking as he set a new personal best of 65.05m.

It is the first time the Liverpool Harrier has broken the 65-metre barrier and it was enough to secure him a comfortable victory.

Bomba was Liverpool’s only A string winner but there were second places for Adam Peers in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:21.06) and Sean McMahon in the long jump (6.91m).

City of Liverpool finished on 299.2pts to take third place out of eight clubs as Belgrave Harriers clinched a comfortable win.

Liverpool Harriers won their Northern Division Three West match at Wavertree to stay clear in top spot.

In the women’s events there were A string victories for Amy Forrester (200m, 26.3), Rebecca Linney (800m, 2:18.0), Carla Jones (400m hurdles, 70.2), Katarina Thompson (100m hurdles, 15.1) and Bethan Hughes (triple jump, 9.70).

The men also impressed with wins for Alex Boyce (400m, 51.3), James Blackburn (800m, 2:03.0), Steve Freeman (400m hurdles, 1:01.1), Les McIntosh (hammer, 49.97), Chris Bramhall (javelin, 40.63), Alex Taylor (triple jump, 13.28) and Chris Price (high jump, 1.75m).

Southport Waterloo won the battle of the local clubs in the Northern League Division Two West match at Litherland.

They finished third on 336pts with St Helens Sutton fourth (313) and Liverpool Pembroke Sefton fifth (302) out of the six teams.
