DUAL-CODE international Brian Carney is awaiting permission to make his return to Super League in the unlikely setting of Barcelona.
The former Wigan and Great Britain winger, who will turn 33 next month, is in the second week of training with Warrington and poised to make his debut for them in Saturday’s game against Catalans Dragons, which is being played at Spain’s Olympic Stadium.
Carney has joined the Wolves to the end of the season after completing his commitments with Munster and the Irish Rugby Football Union, although he remains under contract for another fortnight.
“I’ll find out in the next couple of days where I stand,” he told a press conference at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
“My contract with Ireland doesn’t run out until the end of the month so I’m speaking to them at the moment.”
Warrington coach Tony Smith confirmed that Carney would travel to Barcelona and a decision on whether he plays would be made in the week.
Addressing the media for the first time since his signing was announced by Warrington, Carney admitted he struggled to adapt to the 15-man code.
