Athletics: David Forrester shatters personal record

TALENTED middle distance runner David Forrester shattered his 1,500m personal best in the BMC Grand Prix at Watford.

The 19-year-old University of Liverpool student clocked 3:40.81 – nearly a second quicker than his previous best – to set a new St Helens Sutton club record.

After the pacemakers ran out of steam with 600m to go, Forrester took up the lead in a high quality race but ultimately finished in third place.

Forrester also competed in the Super8 event in Cardiff and ran well in a tactical race to take second in 3:50.77.

Liverpool Harriers’ Jonny Mellor was in action at Watford and he set a new PB of 13:57.70 for third place in the 5000m. It was the first time Mellor has dipped under the 14-minute mark.

Liverpool Pembroke Sefton’s Kirsty Longley has also been clocking lifetime bests.

She set a new PB of 10:23.51 in the 3000m race at Stretford and clocked a 1500m PB of 4:41.63 at Watford.

Michael Rimmer kick-started his summer season with two solid runs.

The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton 800m star was due to compete in the Super8 competition at Cardiff but was one of the Nike sponsored athletes withdrawn after a dispute over sponsorship logos.

His agent quickly arranged for him to compete in Montreuil, France a day later and Rimmer clocked 1:47.01 for third place.

Rimmer then took part in the opening IAAF Golden League meeting in Berlin.

He clocked 1:46.31 and clinch second place.

Liverpool Harriers finished last in their National Junior League Northern Premier Division match at SportCity, Manchester.

James Hunter (400m, 47.90) Jack Meredith (110m hurdles, 13.96), Jon Croasdale (400m hurdles, 54.92), Carmen Gedling (100m, 12.30 & 200m, 25.00) were their only A string winners.

St Helens Sutton were depleted for their National Junior League match at Wigan but Sophie Rigby broke three club records.

Rigby cleared 2.30m for second in the under-17 pole vault and her leap of 5.19m in the long jump is a new club best at both under-17 and under-20 levels.

Adam Nicholls achieved a club best performance in the A string long jump as he finished second with 6.27m.

Youngsters headed to the Merseyside County Schools Championships at Bebington Oval dreaming of securing a place at next month’s English Schools Championships in Sheffield.

Southport Waterloo’s Lauren Brennan had already met the mark this year and she won the 400m in 58.9secs.

Five St Helens youngsters achieved English Schools’ entry standards.

Sophie Rigby (1.68m, high jump), Kathryn Sumner (35.61m, hammer) and Chelsea Jarvis (2:15.4, 800m) each set club records, while Liane Bibby (javelin) and John Ashcroft (1500m) also met the qualifying mark. Patricia Spark set another club record of 36.36m in the hammer.
