Tony Smith hails the fans and his Dragons-slaying Warrington heroes

WARRINGTON coach Tony Smith would relish the opportunity to return to Barcelona after beating Catalans Dragons in the first-ever Super League match to be played in Spain.

The Wolves battled back from a 12-6 deficit just after half-time to return to winning ways with a 24-12 victory at the Olympic Stadium.

The historic match drew a crowd of 18,150, with over 12,000 French fans making the two-hour trip over the border to the Catalan capital while around 1,500 travelled from Warrington.

With such interest generated locally and an excellent atmosphere before and during the game, the concept has been hailed a roaring success.

“It was nice to reward our fans with a win after so many of them came all this way,” said Smith.

“There was a great atmosphere between the two sets of fans and we’ve seen the same around the city over the last few days.

“It’s been a great experience and great for rugby league, to have that carnival atmosphere in the city. If we’re asked to come again we’ll put our hand up.”

Jason Croker and Cyril Stacul tries cancelled out Chris Bridge’s early effort for Warrington and Thomas Bosc’s 46th-minute penalty gave the Dragons a 12-6 lead.

But the Wolves showed great resolve to claim their sixth win in seven games after tries by Matt King, Chris Riley and Jon Clarke.

“We were frustrated with ourselves in the first half,” Smith added.

“If you’re not playing smart and you make a couple of errors on top if it, you get hurt.

“That put us behind the eight ball, particularly against a big team like that.

“They’re as big as anything in Super League so to come over here and get the money is a tough ask.

“You’ve got to be smart to do that and we proved that in the second half.

“We were better and we needed to be.

“There was a lot of commitment to one another and we saw that with how we recovered from a couple of their breaks.”
