HAVING suffered two consecutive relegations Waterloo will be hoping they can halt the slide when they open their first season in the new National Two North at home to Huddersfield on Saturday, September 5.
With long distance trips to Cornwall becoming a distant memory, derbies against Kendal, Caldy, Macclesfield, Preston Grasshoppers and Fylde should generate some local rivalry and increased spectator support.
Fylde are holding their 90th anniversary this season and with Waterloo the only side on their current fixture list who were played in 1919 they are to produce a special anniversary programme to coincide with the visit of the Blundellsands club on September 26.
Although the promising James Hall has signed full time for Coventry and Peter Ince has moved over the water to join Caldy, new director of rugby, former Welsh international, Steve Moore is hopeful of retaining the core of last season’s squad.
This, together with some exciting new signings on the horizon, could be the season that sees the Merseysiders re-established as one of the top clubs in the region.
