Despite the near wash-out of the opening day’s play this year, Borg was delighted with the success of the tournament.
“The weather wasn’t that bad,” he explained.
“In eight years we’ve only had two days washed out through the weather, which for the north of England is pretty good going.
“And the Tuesday, when we had 2,500 kids watching Laura Robson play a Pro-Am was amazing. We’ve had a really positive feedback about the whole week and we’re already chasing names for next year’s event.”
Mardy Fish and Michelle Larcher de Brito, the respective men’s and women’s champions this year, carried their winning Merseyside form into Wimbledon earlier this week.
Mardy Fish was leading Sergio Roitman 6-3 6-2 4-1 when the Argentinian retired in their first round clash, while Michelle Larcher de Brito was ranked 15/8 outsider in her first round clash with Czech qualifier Klara Zakopalova, but won in straight sets 6-2 7-5.
Liverpool International finalist, 34-year-old Vince Spadea, won his first match at Wimbledon since reaching the fourth round in 2004, beating Paul Capdeville 6-0 6-4 7-5.
