Wimbledon tennis: Venus Williams glad to be on grass

VENUS WILLIAMS seemed glad to be back on her favoured grass surface after beginning her Wimbledon title defence on Centre Court yesterday.

The American third seed, who has won the last two women’s singles events at SW19, made a winning start against world number 97 Stefanie Voegele.

Williams was made to work hard for the victory and was broken twice in the match by the Swiss teenager, who was making her Wimbledon debut.

But five breaks of her own allowed Williams to claim a 6-3 6-2 result in one hour and 18 minutes,

The five-time Wimbledon champion could not mask her delight at being back on the familiar surroundings of Centre Court.

"It was pretty straightforward," she said. "I really enjoyed being out there.

"It’s a special moment when you walk back as defending champion on that court, throw those balls up for the first point. It’s a really great feeling.

"Wimbledon for me it’s been a place of great success and pure joy, so many wins here in singles and doubles. I feel very good here. and I take advantage of that feeling.

"Playing on grass I think you have the opportunity to make fantastic shots that are very entertaining and great plays.

"I think the game is more fast-paced. It makes it more exciting.", the exchanges."

While Williams has enjoyed immense success at the All England club, she has not been crowned champion at any of the other majors since winning the US Open in 2001.
