Wimbledon tennis: Liverpool's Ken Skupski looking for doubles joy

KEN SKUPSKI is hoping to strike a blow for British tennis at Wimbledon later today.

With British players heading for their worst Wimbledon ever – just Andy Murray and Elena Balatcha made it past the first round while nine other Brits crashed out – Liverpool’s Skupksi and doubles partner Colin Fleming are due to face Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Jean-Julien Rojer of Netherland Antilles in the men’s doubles first round.

"We’ll go into it with a lot of confidence and hopefully get a win," Skupski said.

"It’s a tough one but we’ve definitely got the capabilities to win."

If the British duo can claim victory in their first round clash, they are likely to meet world number one doubles pairing Mike and Bob Bryan of the USA.

The British pair beat the Bryans at Queen’s Club less than two weeks ago and Skupski believes another victory is not beyond them if they are to match up again in round two at Wimbledon.

"We’re looking forward to it, but we’ve got to look at the first match as the big one," continued Skupski.

"Once we get through that – there’s an upset on the cards again hopefully. Maybe we can get on a main court and put on a great show for everybody."

Liverpool-born Jonny Marray, meanwhile, played through the pain-barrier at SW19 to keep his Wimbledon dream alive.
