WIDNES Vikings enter next Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup final clash with Barrow Raiders in scorching form after they dispatched Doncaster in ruthless fashion on Saturday.
Paul Cullen’s team ran in 14 tries with Kevin Penny collecting a hat trick and Richard Varkulis and Paddy Flynn both notching doubles. Impressive on loan Super League centre Craig Hall finished with a 20 point haul after a try and eight conversions.
Toa Kohe-Love, Mark Smith, Richard Fletcher, Steve Pickersgill and Jon Grayshon also got in on the act for the rampant Vikings. Now Cullen says the focus immediately turns to the Raiders and picking up the first piece of silverware on offer in British rugby league.
He said: “The pencil is going to be busy this week. There will be a few names to rub out and then put back in.”
“We rested a few and it allowed me to look at a couple of players. Those players are far better for that.
“We didn’t want to be thrown into a final with players carrying knocks and I’m pleased to say we have no injuries or no issues and are all fit and raring to go.
“We didn’t over expand and to score 78 points you have to dig in and we are in form at the right time. A lot of players have put their hand up.
“There is a lot more to it and the focus must be on the game plan and beating what is a very good Barrow side.
“We know that Barrow will be looking to get their pack running and that is where the game will be won and lost.
“We have got a bit of bang ourselves now and Steve Pickersgill and John Grayshon have done a great job in bolstering this pack.”
