Usain Bolt adds 200m world record to 100m in World Championships in Berlin as Paula Radcliffe runs out

USAIN BOLT created yet another piece of athletics history last night with a sensational victory in the 200 metres at the World Championships in Berlin.

After winning the 100m with a new world record of 9.58 seconds on Sunday, Bolt completed the sprint double by smashing his own world record in the 200m for good measure.

Bolt stormed to victory in the Olympic Stadium in 19.19secs, slashing 0.11 off the time set in Beijing last year, with Panama’s Alonso Edward claiming silver in 19.81 and American Wallace Spearmon the bronze in 19.85.

Bolt, who celebrates his 23rd birthday today, becomes the first man to hold the 100 and 200m world and Olympic titles at the same time following his triumph in last year’s Olympics.

Meanwhile, Paula Radcliffe insists she will not attempt to wrap herself in cotton wool ahead of the 2012 Olympics after pulling out of the World Championship marathon.

After 10 months on the sidelines through injury, Radcliffe tested her fitness in the New York half marathon on Sunday, and looked in impressive form with a comfortable victory.

But after travelling to Germany, the 35-year-old had to admit defeat in her battle to be 100% fit for the marathon in Berlin, where she had hoped to regain the title she won in Helsinki in 2005.

However, she is already targeting the World Half Marathon championships in Birmingham on October 11 as a way to make partial amends for missing out here.

“ I don’t want to go over-reaching and put myself on the line in the world championships unless I’m 100%,” Radcliffe said.

LIVERPOOL’S Michael Rimmer booked his place in tonight’s 800m semi-finals, claiming third place in his heat in 1.48.20.
