West Cheshire chairman Dennis Wall hoping World Championships provide inspiration for local athletes

WEST CHESHIRE AC is providing an open invitation to anyone who has been inspired after watching the World Athletics Championships from Berlin.

The Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club is to open its doors in the hope of attracting enthusiastic new members to their base at Cheshire Oaks High School, on Stanney Lane, in Ellesmere Port.

Chairman and coach, Dennis Wall, is keen to use the successful week-long World Track and Field Championships in Germany as a springboard for those television viewers who have been enthralled and inspired to experience athletics.

He said: “Jessica Ennis, Jenny Meadows, Lisa Dobriskey, Phillips Idowu, and the men’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay squads all provided the British public with a sense of pride and hopefully a slice of inspiration.

“Those memorable images from Berlin still burn bright and I’m hoping they will have generated enthusiasm from people within the area.

“The sport of athletics and West Cheshire Athletic Club in particular now have a big part to play in helping to serve the people within this community and it’s vital that we open our door to the facilities on offer at Cheshire Oaks High School.

“The club caters for juniors and adults at training sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, from 6-8.30pm, and on Saturdays between 10am and 12pm, and we’d be delighted to see any newcomers”

West Cheshire AC was represented by five members at the Birchwood 10k Road Race, near Warrington.

Andrew Clague was the first member to reach the line, clocking 36 minutes 58 seconds, ahead of Mark Povey (46:30), Tony Thackray (56:21), Peter Povey (1:10:39), and Heather Reynolds (1:11:50).

FIXTURES: Northern Inter-Counties Track and Field Match, at Wigan’s Robins Park Stadium, on Saturday.
