GLOVE, ‘love me do’, was the ‘shout’ when the newest Fab Four of British boxing ‘come together’ ‘yesterday’.
The mop top-free quartet promised to show Merseyside sports fans they are ‘getting better all the time’ while giving their opponents a ‘hard days night’ when the prize ring returns to the ECHO Arena on Friday, October 30.
Tony Quigley tops the card in his highly-anticipated first title defence against city rival Paul Smith, but the undercard features four of the hottest prospects in British boxing.
Former England international team-mates James DeGale, Frankie Gavin and homegrown talents Tony Bellew and Stephen Smith will all step into the ring next month aiming to maintain the lofty standards they’ve already set in their paid careers.
Both Olympic champion DeGale and 2007 World Champion Gavin are 3-0 since turning pro at the start of the year while Smith and Bellew boast 17 straight wins between them. All together the quartet have punched for pay 23 times with a 17 knockouts.
After posing for the cameras on Matthew Street, DeGale announced from the Hard Days Night Hotel: “This is a real homecoming fight for me.
“Until I get to fight in London I’ll consider this my homecoming because I love Liverpool. I’ve got great friends here and I’m here at least once a month.
“It’s a great city, my second home, so I can’t wait to fight here again.
“I last fought here in the ABA semi-finals in 2005 so I can’t wait to come back and show the Scousers my skills. After all, skills pay the bills.”
Gavin said: “Likewise, I’m in Liverpool all the time. I consider myself the fifth Smith brother in fact as I spend so much time at their house.
“Although I probably am the hardest brother too!
“But, seriously, this is definitely the best bill I have boxed on so I am really looking forward to it.”
Adding: “The last time I was in Liverpool I got beat up by Mario Kindelan (Cuban former multi Olympic and World champion) but I’ve come along way since then.
“All together I think I’ve boxed in Liverpool around 10 times as an amateur and I always got a good reception.”
Bellew took his career tally into double figures just a week ago with another eye-catching knockout victory, this time over seasoned campaigned Nick Okoth down in London.
Yet ‘The Bomber’ isn’t planning anything but a winning performance next month.
“I don’t know who I am fighting on October 30 so I can’t say whether it will be another knockout victory or not, but I’ll just let him worry about me,” he said.
“To be honest I could be fighting King Kong and I’ll still prepare the same way. I’ll just work hard and get in the ring and do what I do best, and that’s smash people.
“I know if I keep winning like I am I’ll be in title level soon enough and hopefully it will happen in the next six months.”
For ‘Swifty’ Smith, meanwhile, the night is going to be extra special.
As well as older brother Paul headlining in his British title chance, younger brother Liam will also be in action.
The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist confessed: “I believe it’s going to be one of the best nights of my life. Even before I turned professional I said I wanted to fight at the ECHO Arena and to fight there for the first time when my brother wins the British title will make it extra special.
“There will be well more people there on October 30 than where there in March so it’s going to be an even better night, a brilliant atmosphere.
“Hopefully the title fights for me are only a couple more wins away but I have to admit that this fight is going to be weird because even now while I am training all I’m thinking about is Paul beating Quigley.
“All I want is for the three brothers to all win on the night and all the lads on the card winning too, lads I’ve travelled the world with.”
