Undercard for British Super-Middleweight Title fight at Echo Arena billed as ‘Fab Four’

HOME-TOWN boxer Tony Bellew says he would relish an all-city clash with Carl Dilks at the Echo Arena next month.

The city’s Hard Days Night Hotel was the venue for a Beatles-themed press conference ahead of the British Super-Middleweight Title clash between scousers Tony Quigley and challenger Paul Smith on October, 30.

Billed as the ‘Fab Four’, , Olympians James DeGale and Frankie Gavin were joined by Bellew and Stephen Smith yesterday and together will front a stunning undercard in five weeks time.

The quartet have a rich amateur pedigree but now are causing a stir in the professional ranks with growing reputations as knockout specialists.

Opponents are still to be found for the group, but Bellew (10-0) was keen to add another derby match-up to the bill.

He said: “It will be the biggest fight since Shea Neary and Andy Holligan so it is going to be a special night and a special occasion for Liverpool and British boxing. I don’t think about the opponent, I could be fighting King Kong and I would still prepare the same way.

“I just get in the ring and do what I do best and that is smash people. I don’t know about another knock out but he will have a face that’s messed up and a body that’s injured.

“I would love it to be an all-Liverpool clash, I am sick of Carl Dilks saying him and Courtney Fry are the best light-heavyweights in the city. All I want him to do is prove it. Put up or shut up, fight me or go away. I want to fight him and will do anything to make the fight happen.

“I don’t believe it would get past six rounds, I will smash him to bits, he has not got a chance with me, it is as simple as that.”

Beijing gold medallist James DeGale (3-0) said: “Liverpool is my second home, I am always up here and I take this as my homecoming until I fight in London, so I’m looking forward to it.”

For featherweight Smith (7-0) the night holds extra significance with older brother Paul topping the bill and younger sibling Liam opening the evening’s proceedings.

He said: “It is going to be one of the best bills I have ever boxed on and will be one of the best nights of my life, fighting the same night my brother becomes British champion. It is an unbelievable feeling to know my brother will become British champion.”
