Anxious Waterloo mauled by the Lions

AS A game targeted as a home win Waterloo’s ‘arrows’ fell somewhat short as they went down 10-24 at home to Rugby Lions.

Rugby Lions, enjoying a surfeit of possession in the opening quarter could only managed two penalties from Lloyd Walker due in large part to a very well organised defence.

A third penalty from Lloyd extended the lead but despite Waterloo losing Martin Bell to the sin bin the home side looked the more likely, a superb cross kick from Liam Reeve taken on the full by James O’Brien almost brought a score as the centre was tackled short before a charging run from new prop Keni Barrett supported by Njike Tchakoute sucked in enough defenders for James Gee to coast in close to the posts, Liam McGovern successful with the conversion.

In the second period Warner added a fourth penalty but with Waterloo expecting a knock on Rugby went over for a try converted by Warner and with Jeffery Gregson going in for a second the Lions were 7-24 ahead. McGovern slotted a penalty to cut the deficit and with Rugby losing Darrell Buchnall to the sin bin Waterloo tried to take advantage but over- anxiety at crucial moments allowed Rugby Lions to remain in charge and take the points.
