Jenson Button’s fatehr reveals emotions

JOHN BUTTON revealed son Jenson cried his eyes out as they embraced following his drive to Formula One world title glory.

With a glass of champagne in his hand and choking back a tear, John Button said: “It’s just amazing.

“But this morning Jenson did say to me ‘Dad, you’re going to enjoy this one.’

“His target was to finish on the podium and I thought ’Oh, he is going to drive that way,’ and it was a mega drive. I’m so happy.

“But I could hardly watch as the overtaking was going on. I was peeping through my fingers.

“For those last seven laps I was holding it back and then when he crossed the line, off I went, and when he came on the radio and he was crying, that didn’t help either.

“When I then saw him I couldn’t get him off me. He was crying his eyes out and saying ’I’m world champion.’ That’s all he was saying. No other words.

“We were like babies.

“This is exactly what I wanted to happen, that it would be a championship-winning drive, and it really was.

“People will now forget the iffy bit in the middle of the year and we can look to party at the next race (in Abu Dhabi on November 1).

“His image is very important to me, how he goes down in history, not just as world champion, just the whole thing. Now he’s done the job.”
