Caldy Rugby Club keen to find winning formula at home

CALDY coach Matt Holt will be doing everything he can to make sure this weekend’s National Two North game against Hull Ionians bucks a trend.

While Caldy have an impressive away record so far this season, winning four out of four, they have suffered two defeats at home against Fylde and Huddersfield.

After going to Hull to take on the other side from the Humber on Saturday and coming away with a win, Holt is hoping his players can keep up that form.

He said: “After everything that has happened over the past four or five weeks for the players, they did well to turn around the disappointing loss against Fylde.

“We maintained our 100% away record and they really dug deep, especially in the last 10 minutes.

“This weekend the boys are keen to start matching our away record, but if last year is anything to go by it is going to be a tough one.”

The last time Hull Ionians visited Paton Field, Caldy edged it 20-19 so Saturday’s game – kicking off at 2.15pm – promises to be a good one to watch.

At Hull, the Caldy first team came away 41-29 to the good.

The match was littered with penalties which gave Richard Vasey plenty of scoring opportunities that he converted into 21 points for his team. The half-time score, after only a try apiece from Shaun Woof and Rob Kitching, stood at 19-14 for Caldy.

The point scoring in the second half opened with another penalty from Vasey but on 53 minutes, Paul Arnold broke the sequence of penalties as he powered over the line, for his 10th try of the season, following excellent work by Craig Smithson. A penalty try and another five-pointer from Stuart Turner near the final whistle sealed the win for the visitors – and a vital bonus point into the bargain.

The second XV are away to Fylde this week and the thirds are also away at Winnington Park.
