Death of Lancs stalwart Collins

FORMER Lancashire and Cheshire all-rounder Roy Collins has died suddenly at the age of 75.

Roy played 119 first-class matches for Lancashire from 1954-62, becoming capped in 1961 after scoring an unbeaten century against Somerset at Bath.

He later played for Cheshire in Minor Counties cricket from 1963-73 before becoming a popular and successful professional with clubs in various leagues including Leek, Lowerhouse, Blackburn, Northern, Rochdale and Didsbury in the Manchester Association and later the Cheshire County League.

A plaque set in the wall at the indoor school at Withington, acknowledges the 32 years Roy spent as residential coach for the Manchester Education Committee.

In his retirement, Roy was a regular attender at Lancashire Former Players Association functions and remained an enthusiastic supporter of the game at grass roots level.
