HARLEQUINS centre Gonzalo Tiesi is determined to shatter England’s already-dented pride by inspiring Argentina to victory at Twickenham tomorrow afternoon.
England head into the game on the back of an 18-9 defeat to Australia and a performance described by forwards coach John Wells as “turgid”.
Tiesi expects an immediate response from England but he believes the injury-hit Pumas can repeat their famous 2006 Twickenham victory.
“England were beaten in the contact area and in the physicality and they will touch their pride a little bit,” said Tiesi.
“England are a tough unit and they won’t take defeat at home well. We will expect a strong England team who are up for the game.
“The first half an hour is key for us and we need to keep control of the pace of the game and keep England on the back foot.
“It was defence that won Australia the game. If we can put them under pressure and keep Jonny Wilkinson controlled, it will be a different game.”
Argentina are ranked two places above England in fifth place and are building a new team following their 2007 World Cup heroics.
The Pumas will miss their world-class playmakers Juan Martin Hernandez and Felipe Contepomi but they still pose a formidable threat up front.
No longer do the South Americans turn up at Twickenham just for the experience of playing England but with every expectation they can win. That victory in 2006 which drove one of the final nails into the coffin of Andy Robinson’s time as England coach, sparked that new-found belief.
