John McNally wants to see a return to stylish rugby at Birkenhead Park

BIRKENHEAD PARK failed in their bid for a third successive Cheshire Cup final as they crashed out to a determined Lymm outfit at the Upper Park on Saturday.

There was not much in it but yet again Park failed to convert pressure into points and paid the penalty in a 14-7 reverse.

On a positive note, there was a highly promising debut in the back row for flanker Adam Couples, the latest in a long line of John Moores University students to appear for the Park seniors. Couples scored Park’s only try against Lymm

and the Ballymena man looks set for a bright future in the game.

This Saturday, Park welcome Rossendale to the Upper Park and desperately need a win to re-light their season after two lack lustre performances. This is the first time the two sides have met in a competitive fixture.

Director of rugby John McNally said: “We have lost our way somewhat after promising much. It is frustrating because we have looked capable of being as good as anyone in the league at times.

“Our play has become too sterile and predictable and we are looking at ways to produce a more enjoyable style and get back in that winning habit.”

With Couples staking a claim for a place in the starting line-up there will be competition in the pack with the influential Dave Blyth also set to return after missing the Lymm contest.

Park have started a new under-10s team who had their first fixture at Anselmians on Sunday. More players are welcome and anyone interested should report to the club welfare officer Greg Casey at the Upper Park on Sunday mornings at 10.30am.
