Caldy RUFC and Waterloo RUFC target improvement depsite winning weekend

WATERLOO director of rugby Steve Moore is targeting a number of improvements in his side despite their weekend victory.

Waterloo won 28-26 at Broadstreet on Saturday in National Two North despite losing a total of four players to the sin bin.

“It’s hard enough to compete with 15 players on the park let alone 14 or even 13,” said Moore ahead of this weekend’s hosting of Caldy.

“Now we can’t legislate for certain referees’ interpretations of the law and I’m not going to compromise the way that I direct certain individuals to play, but we have to be far more aware of where we are on the field and play with a little more guile.

“We are working with a referee in training to try and solve this important issue.”

Looking at other areas where he is looking for improvement, Moore added: “There are certain areas of the pitch where I want our outside half or inside centre to kick for field position and put the ball in front of our forwards, this is predominantly in our defensive third.

“This hasn’t always been the case though.

“In the first two matches we tried to play too much out of our 22 and since then we reverted to kicking everything that isn’t quick ball.

“In recent weeks we have become a lot more confident in our ability to retain possession with our scrum and line-out.”

The other issue which he is looking it as quicker ruck ball, an area which is causing problems throughout the game. Moore said: “Now that we are building up our phase play we have to become far more effective at recycling the ball quickly, we are constantly working on body positions in defence and attack and looking at rucking beyond the contact rather than to the contact as we see so often at the moment.

“There will be occasions when slow ball is inevitable and we do have several starter moves to turn that slow ball in to quick possession – these were effective last Saturday and we are continuing to work on this in training.”

Caldy beat Rugby Lions 17-11 on Saturday but coach Matt Holt is also writing ‘could do better’ on the Christmas holiday report card.

He said: “Last weekend was a good result, but the first half left a lot to be desired and the discipline wasn’t at its greatest. The boys know what they have to do and they’re definitely going to be up for the win this weekend against Waterloo.

“It’s one of those fixtures that they all look forward to.”

Waterloo are currently sat at the bottom of the table but the rivalry between the two clubs always ensures an interesting game. Kick-off is 2.15pm on Saturday.

Caldy’s second XV are also away, making the trip to Manchester, while the thirds are at home to Leigh.

WATERLOO Ladies started the season early this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the section.

And there is plenty to celebrate on the field too as, going into the Christmas break, the team currently lead Championship One North having played nine and won eight, their only defeat away to a heavyweight and more experienced Vale of Lune.

The return game is the first after the break on Sunday, January 10, kick-off 2pm at Blundellsands.

Home wins against Camp Hill (5-0), Olney (36-0), Loughborough (19-5), Lakenham Hewitt (36-0), and Altrincham Kersal (57-5) together with away wins at Altrincham (38-5), Leos (15-14) and Olney (15-0), supplemented with four try bonus points, have given the ladies a one-point lead at the top of the table.

Flying winger Danielle Wiseman has scored eight tries including two hat-tricks, while Rachael Thomas has a better kicking success rate than the current England Ladies fly-half.
