Birkenhead Park RUFC rue missed chances in first half of season

THE postponement of the entire National Three North programme at the weekend brought Birkenhead Park’s rugby year to an early conclusion as the scheduled Mersey derby at Red Rocks against West Park was one of many victims of the freeze-up.

Park appear to be comfortably placed in mid-table but it is a case of what might have been had they taken some key chances.

Director of rugby John McNally said: “We could easily have been up there with Morley at the top of the table. In my view we threw away the games at Beverley, Morley, Cleckheaton and Rochdale when they were clearly there for the taking.

“We have only been outplayed once and that was at Stockport.

“However, the league table doesn’t lie and we have only ourselves to blame for not being up there at the top.

“We know if we hit form we can compete with anyone and if we can be consistent we can still have a good second half to the season. Our home form has been good and we remain unbeaten in league matches at the Upper Park but we definitely need to start winning more on the road.”

Overall the club is vibrant, with the long-standing connection with John Moores University continuing to be an integral part of the club.
