St HELENS captain Keiron Cunningham will aim to finish on a high in 2010 after confirming that engage Super League XV will be his farewell season.
The 33-year-old former Great Britain hooker has twice postponed his retirement in the last two years by signing new 12-month contracts, but insists his latest deal will be his last.
Fittingly, Saints will leave Knowsley Road at the end of the season as they prepare to move into a new stadium and a bronze statue of Cunningham will be erected to mark his contribution to the club.
One of the legends of the modern game, the Welsh international has been a fixture at Knowsley Road since August 1994 when he made his debut at the age of 17, but he is confident he will leave the hooking role in good hands.
England international James Roby has been his understudy for the last three years and the competition is increased for 2010 by the return of another specialist hooker, Scott Moore, after loan spells with Castleford and Huddersfield.
“This is definitely my last season,” said Cunningham. “Young Scott has come back and Robes is chomping at the bit.
“They’re ready to take over so this is a year for me to help with the transition, give a bit of guidance.
“I feel that they are the best nines in the country and will be the best nines in the country for the next few years so Saints are blessed again.
As captain, Cunningham will almost certainly start the season against Hull on Saturday week as hooker and has ruled out switching to another position to accommodate his young rivals.
However, he is aiming to bow out with a Grand Final ring after being on the losing side against Leeds in the last three deciders at Old Trafford.
Cunningham added: “I remember Paul Anderson finishing with a Grand Final win and I’d love to do the same.
“I feel we’ve got a good enough squad to do that.”
