Anthony Hamilton to launch young drivers’ school as launchpad to Formula One

ANTHONY HAMILTON is planning to launch a young drivers’ school as a stepping stone to Formula One.

The GP Prep Drivers Academy will see Hamilton, father of 2008 world champion Lewis, lease a number of 2009-spec Formula One cars.

The move allows motor racing’s up-and-coming stars of the future to test F1 machinery without being constrained by the current rules.

With in-season testing banned and young drivers only allowed to run in a three-day test at the end of a year, chances are limited.

“If you look at our sport drivers are very lucky to make F1 because there’s no career path structure for it,” Hamilton said.

“There are guys who don’t get a look in. The idea with GP Prep is to provide more of an opportunity for young drivers to be spotted.”

McLaren have agreed to supply two cars to Hamilton, who is in talks with other teams in the hope they will also provide cars, personnel and equipment.

It is hoped the first of the Academy days will be in March, with details regarding circuits to be confirmed, although most likely in the UK.

Meanwhile, yesterday Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa took the wraps off the new Ferrari they hope will deliver them the Formula One world title.

“This is a special moment because last year was very difficult as I had the accident and everything else that happened,” said Massa. “I’m very proud, very happy, and I now want to work more than ever, so I really hope this will be a very competitive car and we will be fighting for the championship.”
