FOLLOWING three successive wins in National Three North, Caldy RUFC will be looking to extend their winning streak at home when they entertain Preston Grasshoppers this weekend.
Last weekend, Caldy managed to overcome a resilient Waterloo side in their local derby game and will be looking to take some of the positives from that game into this weekend’s tough fixture.
Preston presently sit in 10th place in the league with sevens wins and sevens losses but are always a tough prospect with director of rugby, Alex Keay, a seasoned campaigner pulling the strings.
Caldy sustained an injury last weekend with Craig Ross suffering a recurrence of the hamstring pull that saw him miss some games earlier this season.
Jon Nugent may well come back into contention having played for the second XV last weekend.
Preston’s danger man is their fly-half Alexander Zavallis Roebuck.
He is a clever running number 10 and is also Preston’s top scorer this season with 92 points to his name.
Captain Shaun Woof commented: “Last weekend was a big day for Caldy RUFC.
“As far as anyone can remember, the first league meeting between two neighbouring sides and it was vital to get a win.
“Waterloo were excellent in defence and caused us some real problems at time but we managed to overpower them in the end and get the five points we set out to achieve.
“It was great going back to club that I played for some years ago and seeing some of the same old faces.”
And speaking ahead of this weekend’s fare, Woof added: “This weekend, the attitude will be no different than we have prepared for every other game this season.
“Preston are always a really tough team to beat and they will be looking to gain some revenge following our win at Lightfoot Green earlier in the season. Preston have a big set of forwards and they will be looking to win the battle with our forwards who have been excellent all season.”
