NEVER has the phrase “a game of two halves” been more apt than it was at Paton Field this weekend.
The first half saw 43 points scored whereas the second half produced no points.
Cady’s first half performance was sublime at times as both forwards and backs worked in harmony in arguably their most complete half of the season. It took only three minutes for Caldy to get on the score sheet with Jake Lyon collecting a pass from his back row partner Jon Sewell to score near to the posts.
Vasey added the conversion. Three minutes later, Caldy were under the posts again when Dickinson was the benefactor of an excellent scrummage and touched down close to the uprights.
Vasey again got the extras. Jack Collister who had another superb game in the second row then joined the party as he crashed over on the left wing after excellent work by the Caldy forwards.
Vasey missed the conversion. Dickinson got his second of the day when he was fed by Sewell again and Vasey added to his tally with the conversion. Preston then crossed line when an excellent phase of play by their backs out on the left wing reached full back McKenna in space and he got Preston’s first points of day. Caldy hit back with the try of the day when Jake Lyon made a scintillating break down the right wing and fed Ben MacPherson who slid over the line to score Caldy’s fifth try of the half.
On the stroke of half time, the dangerous Zavallis-Roebuck found some space out wide and scored Preston’s second try of the half to leave the scores 33-10 at half time.
And that is how it stayed for the second half. Preston were by far the more dominant side in the second half as they retained possession for long periods of the half but were unable to turn their pressure into points and the half was played out as a stalemate.
